Shakespeare portrait is a fake The Grafton Portrait: It is now thought that the Grafton Portrait depicts another man who lived at the same time as Shakespeare. The painting was previously believed to have shown the Bard at the age of 24, and its beauty, sensitivity and passion helped to inspire the image of him portrayed in the film Shakespeare in Love.
However yesterday, after a nine-month investigation, the National Portrait Gallery said there was no evidence that the painting was of Shakespeare. At the age of 24, Shakespeare would have been unable to afford the sumptuous silk and satin jacket worn by the man, having recently become a father to twins and possibly joining a travelling theatre troupe. Research and restoration did confirm that it depicts a contemporary of Shakespeare, as it was painted in when he was An inscription on the painting records the age of the sitter as It’s an expensive and timely process.

The Romans reinterpreted myths and concepts pertaining to the Greek Eros for Cupid in their own literature and art, and medieval and Renaissance mythographers conflate the two freely. In the Greek tradition, Eros had a dual, contradictory genealogy. He was among the primordial gods who came into existence asexually; after his generation, deities were begotten through male-female unions.
Before the existence of gender dichotomy, Eros functioned by causing entities to separate from themselves that which they already contained. Seneca says that Vulcan , as the husband of Venus, is the father of Cupid. This last Cupid was the equivalent of Anteros , “Counter-Love,” one of the Erotes , the gods who embody aspects of love. During the English Renaissance , Christopher Marlowe wrote of “ten thousand Cupids”; in Ben Jonson ‘s wedding masque Hymenaei , “a thousand several-coloured loves His symbols are the arrow and torch, “because love wounds and inflames the heart.
Nor hath love’s mind of any judgement taste; Wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste. And therefore is love said to be a child Because in choice he is so oft beguiled. From a 14th Century text of Roman de la Rose Cupid carries two kinds of arrows, one with a sharp golden point, and the other with a blunt tip of lead.

It is true that access to the fossils were restricted. This is normal practice for rare and valuable fossils. However it is doubtful that this “security” protected the hoax. The fossils were available for examination. The tests that exposed the hoax could have been performed at any time. The single most important thing that protected the hoax from exposure was that nobody thought of the possibility. However in reading the history of the find it is clear that the leading paleontologists had access to the Piltdown man specimans.
For example, Hrdlicka examined them; his rejection of the mandible and cranium being from the same animal was based on direct examination. Had the investigators been permitted to handle the actual specimens, I think the spurious nature of the jaw would have been detected long ago. Wilfred Le Gros Clark, a member of the team that exposed the forger, wrote to Hinton reminding him that Woodward had in fact allowed other specialists to examine the originals.
The charge seems to have stuck, however. Frank Spencer, The Piltdown Forgery, p. It does seem to be the case that access to the fossils was quite restricted in later years. In his autobiographical book By the Evidence Leakey said when he saw Piltdown in
